A little Mythology
Ayurveda is detailed as wisdom of life ,recollected by Brahma, the creator which was comprised of lakh slokas which for the benefit of suffering man kind,he bestowed down to Prajapathi. From prajapathi Indra learned it and from Indra rishi sages like Atreya learned ayurveda. Rishi Atreya taught Agnivesa, bhela, jatookarna, parasara, hareetha & ksharapani. It was These Rishi sages who made ayurveda in to manuscript forms.
The Book written by Agnivesa was re worked by Charaka acharya in 500 B.C which was codified by Drida bala later is the Oldest Ayurvedic text book available now which is known as ‘Charaka Samhita’.
Charaka is believed to be the first of the physicians.
Susrutha who is known as father of surgery who believed to be lived in 300BC details in his Book Susrutha samhita that the Ayurveda was Recollected by Brahma & taught to Prajapathi in turn taught Aswini devas the Vidya lords then Indra who taught Divodasa who is known as Dhanwantari.
Dhanwantari divodasa is the guru of surgeons trait like Susrutha, Aupadhenava, Vaitharana, etc.
Though there is a dispute about the Vedic origin of Ayurveda, it is agreed by all that the Physicians trait was from Rigveda & Surgeons trait from Atharva veda.
History of Ayurveda
Chaturvarnya –the Brahmin dominant cast & creed divisions which was prevalent in ancient India had played its role in the destruction of surgeons trait in Ayurveda which was worsened by the Buddhism later since the dead body dissection which was essential for surgical study & excellence and surgical procedures were considered to be un ethical those days. Later the invasions completed the damage.
Kerala the cradle of Ayurveda
Compared to other parts of India Kerala was a landscape which was politically stable, unaffected by invasions. After the fall of the then great University ‘Taxilla’ (takshasila) by the invasion of Muhammad Ghori, a part of the saints and teachers fled to southern end with the palm leaf manuscripts for solace, settled in kerala later. They practiced and spread the richness of Ayurveda here. The politically stable nature helped to spread Ayurvedic health practices as a part of the routine life of keralites.
Cholayil & Ayurveda
In addition to Ashta vaidya families& Arya vaidyas who practiced Ayurveda in its original & rich forms through generations, there were a lot of families of the other casts in which Vaidyas with rich Ayrvedic wisdom hailed. They were respected and were given a high social status irrespective of the Brahmin dominated civilisation.
Cholayil is one of Such families from Trissur district of Kerala, that gave birth to the Ayurvedic legands like Cholayil Kunjimami vaidyar, Sankaran vaidyar K.M Vaidyar, etc..who has not only practiced Ayurveda in its true spirits but also bestowed down their traditional knowledge through Books and manuscripts to the next generation.
